My name is Sol Labos Brien, I was born in Tangiers, Morocco, where my father was an important porcelain, glass and silver retailer. Since childhood, I have been exposed to beautiful porcelain objects, never thinking that one day I would be creating and painting these same kind of pieces. Inspired by Sèvres, Meissen, Dresden, KPM and others, I paint exotic birds, bouquets, 18th century scenes, landscapes and portraits on Limoges blanks. All my pieces are unique, and they are both signed and numbered.
In 1961, my family moved to Montreal, Canada. In my early years, I studied at the École des Beaux Arts in Montréal. I graduated as a Fashion Designer at the Montreal Fashion Arts Academy. For several years, I have been working as a fashion buyer for different chain stores before opening my own high-end fashion boutique. Later, I was an oil painting student under the direction of the well-known painter Jean Carris, with whom I also had numerous live-model workshops. It was with him that I learned to look and really see. After admiring an exhibition of Sèvres porcelain at the Louvres, I became a serious student of porcelain painting. I have studied under Louise Savard and Denise Lafortune in Montréal, among other china-painting teachers, and lately under Gigi Branch, from the United Kingdom, who was trained at Atelier Le Tallec, in Paris. I also has attended courses for portrait painting with Violet Temple and Raised gold with Barbara Jensen.
After numerous demands, I have created Atelier de Bercy, a studio specializing in painting exclusive designs on Limoges porcelain. I import all of my blanks from France and use the same techniques of the XVIIIth century with color pigments and oils, firing them at very high temperatures. I produce unique paintings, masterfully rendered, very often using precious powdered gold and raised paste to enhance the details. It takes me several hours and numerous firings to accomplish one single piece. I accept commissions and can paint any subject. I am currently working on an innovative product for an American investor that will be distributed worldwide.
I am also an avid collector of Le Tallec porcelain, some of which are featured in a new book titled “Atelier Le Tallec Hand Painted Limoges Porcelain” written by Keith and Thomas Waterbrook-Clyde. My historical knowledge of porcelain also contributed to the book.
I am a member of the PAC Porcelain Artists of Canada and the Quebec Porcelain Association. I am listed on the Porcelain Painters International Online, as well as The China Painting List Registry for China Painters.
My work has been featured in several exhibitions and can be found in private collections throughout the world. I am represented by the new Cavendish Gallery in Montreal. I also teach at my atelier and give seminars on porcelain painting in the French style and portraiture around the world.
